In winter, your four-legged friend spends much more time relaxing on his bed. For this reason, you should ensure he feels entirely comfortable and warm in it. The addition of a nice-to-touch dog blanket will help you with this.
In winter, the dog needs more cuddling and warmth when sleeping at night or after dinner naps than in summer. When the seasons change, it’s time to wash your dog’s bed. You can also change its arrangement at home and, what I especially recommend, add a soft dog blanket to the bed.
What you will learn from this article:
- It is worth washing the dog bed with the change of season
- Reposition your dog’s bed so that it is not in a draft
- Add a soft and warm blanket to the dog bed
Dog bed for the winter
In winter, my four-legged friend appreciates relaxing together at home more than long games outside. Although I try to spend a lot of time outdoors with my dog, I also ensure a pleasant atmosphere at home.
Wanting my dog to feel good during his favourite after-dinner naps on winter days, I ensure his bed is enveloping and warm. Does this mean I always buy my dog a new bed when winter comes? Not necessarily.
Therefore, I will be happy to share with you what bedding for a dog to choose for the winter and how to prepare better the bed it already has for winter. Your dog will be pleased when you care for his sleep quality during these long winter days. Your pet will feel happy and fully taken care of by your side.
Does a dog need more warmth in the house in winter
As a dog sitter, you certainly know that some dogs require additional support against the cold in the form of clothes during the winter. Some dog breeds are not adapted to walks on freezing days. Therefore, in their case, it is evident that they will need clothes in the winter.
However, how is it for frosty days and the dog’s arrival at home? Could he also need extra support and warmth here? I want to answer these questions in this article.
First, a lot depends on what breed your four-legged friend is. If it is a husky or malamute, additional support at home during the winter may be completely unnecessary. However, if we are talking about dog breeds such as the Maltese or French Bulldog, the situation will be different here.
Therefore, I cannot say unequivocally whether your dog will need additional support in winter or not. Here your subjective opinion is already required, based on the knowledge of the needs of your four-legged friend.
So if you think your dog may need additional support against the cold at home during long evenings, I will tell you how to take care of your pet’s comfort.
My dog belongs to the group of dogs for whom relaxation and a nap in bed are as crucial as playing outdoors. Therefore, I know what can make your four-legged friend feel more comfortable during these colder days. You also want your dog to feel good and safe in your home.
How to prepare your dog’s bed for the winter
Does my dog have different bedding for summer and winter? Of course not. However, this does not mean that his lair looks the same on hot and cold days. When the temperature outside the window becomes less favourable, I ensure my dog feels entirely comfortable while sleeping.
Change the position of the dog’s bed
One of the things I do with the onset of winter or summer is change the location of my dog’s bed. When the days are warm, I place the bed, so fresh air reaches it, e.g. near a window or balcony. Thanks to this, my four-legged friend is much more relaxed in hot weather.
In winter, it does the opposite. I ensure the bed is not in the draft or close to the window, which I sometimes open in winter. If you have a fireplace, you can place the dog’s bed near it. Just ensure the bed is not too close to the fireplace because your dog may be too hot in such a situation.
I always place my four-legged friend’s bed closer to the radiator in winter. He enjoys it immensely and feels much more comfortable sleeping or napping. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend this solution.
Wash the top layer of the bed
I don’t know about you, but it gives me much energy to enter a new season if they accompany this order. That also applies to my dog’s accessories. Of course, I take care of their hygiene daily. However, the change of season is a stimulus for me to clean the space around me.
Therefore, when winter begins, I recommend you wash the cover of your four-legged friend’s bed. Dogs spend much more time in their bedding in winter compared to summer. Therefore, your dog will be much more pleasant napping on a fresh and evaporative bed.
If you do not know how to clean your dog’s accessories, I refer you to my other entry devoted to this subject, which you will find HERE. First, I pay attention to whether the bed I buy for my dog can be washed in a washing machine. That is very important to me because this way of washing makes me feel that my dog’s bed is thoroughly cleaned.
Equip the dog bed with an additional blanket
What is the basis for me to prepare my dog’s bed for the winter is to cover it with a blanket. Thanks to this, my four-legged friend is much warmer. The NAP blanket from Bowl&Bone Republic will be perfect for this role. It is incredibly soft and enjoyable to the touch. It will significantly support your dog against the cold on cold days.
I love watching my dog lying on his bed, wrapping himself in his blanket and napping. I know it feels hot and safe then. I highly recommend trying if you haven’t put a blanket on your four-legged friend’s bed. I am sure that your dog will be delighted, especially on long winter evenings.

Type of bedding for the winter
I recommend choosing a dog sleeping bag for your four-legged friend in winter. That bed type will work especially for dogs that love being wrapped.
The dog can go inside the sleeping bag or cover himself in it. It is something like a combination of a bed and a blanket. If you don’t know which sleeping bag to choose at the beginning, I can recommend the BLISS line from Bowl&Bone Republic.
Winter days on a warm dog bed
Nothing is as relaxing as moments of peace spent at home. Your dog also needs such moments in his life. The warmth and security he feels lying in his bed are priceless.
