Dogs have several typical habits. It’s worth knowing them to understand better your dog’s needs as well as their daily behaviour. One of the dog’s habits is wagging his tail and sniffing people he meets. These pets are also fond of taking naps during the day.

What will you find out from this article:

  • Dogs have several habits that are typical of them

  • Dogs tend to take several naps during a day

Dog habits

Have you ever wondered how well you know your four-legged friend? I think most guardians think they know absolutely everything about their pooch. So today I would like to talk about dogs’ habits. Of course, it is worth mentioning at the very beginning that each pooch is different, so they have their individual preferences.

However, in this article, I would like to focus on the habits typical of dogs. As you can guess, our quadrupeds have a lot in common, regardless of whether we are talking about a doggy with a pedigree or a mongrel.

I am curious how many of these dog habits are well known to you from everyday life with your dog at your side. Write to me in the comment what you think, and what are typical dog habits. I am very curious about your answer.

Do dogs resemble each other?

A characteristic feature of dogs is that they can differ from each other. Not only considering their appearance but also their character. When taking care of our four-legged friend we are not sure what he will become in the future. Of course, our upbringing has a huge impact on this process, but not the only one.

Although dogs can be very different from each other in many important matters, they also have many common features. So, I think we can say that dogs are similar in many aspects of their lives. Having a dog under your care, you can expect the same from other dogs as well.

There’s no denying that we are such big fans of them because of these, typical characteristics of doggies. In my opinion, the selfless friendship of a dog is one of those qualities. I think that most pets have such an approach to their owners, and we can consider this attitude typical for a pooch.

What are the dog’s habits?

Many dogs have very similar habits. If you are considering taking a dog under your care, it is a good idea to find out more about them. This is very important to make sure your dog is the right pet for you. Perhaps the character and typical behaviours of a pooch are not what you are looking for in your pet.

If so, it would be a better choice to take, for example, a cat under your care if that cat is more suited to the lifestyle you lead. Remember, just because many people love dogs doesn’t mean that you also must have a four-legged friend in your home. A dog is a living creature that feels, and I guarantee he could sense if you didn’t quite feel the satisfaction and joy of his relationship.

Dogs wag their tail

One of the most popular doggy habits is tail wagging. This is how dogs express a lot of their emotions. Both the negative and the positive. I’m sure you also associate pooches with tail wagging.

If you want to learn more about what your pooch is saying when he waggles his tail, I refer you to my other post. where I explain how to correctly read your dog’s tail movements to find out what your four-legged friend wants to tell you.

The dog sniffs other dogs and people

The sense of smell is extremely important for your dog’s perception of the world around him. It is with the help of scents that your pet can identify the people, things, or places it meets.

Therefore, one of the typical dog habits is sniffing people met on his way, both other dogs and people. This is a natural behaviour of dogs. In this way, the pooch recognizes whether he knows a given person, and he can recognize his attitude.

So if you see that your four-legged friend wants to sniff the person he meets, if there are no contraindications, allow him to do so. It’s his need.

I mentioned the lack of contraindications, I am already telling you why. A lot depends on the situation you are in. If you are passing a doggie who appears to be clearly aggressive, it is not a good idea to let your doggie sniff him. We are not sure how another aggressive dog will behave towards your pet.

Similarly, when your pooch wants to sniff a completely unknown person. You can’t predict how a stranger will react to your dog. Perhaps he suffers from a fear of dogs, so such a meeting will arouse very unpleasant emotions in such a person.

Dogs love naps

I admit, that when I have a hard day, sometimes I take a little afternoon nap on the couch. I know that my body needs it very much at the moment, and I always try to follow that feeling. For our four-legged friends, naps are a constant part of every day.

Before taking a dog under my care, I thought that dogs had a similar sleep system to us. They are active during the day and go to sleep at night. I couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, my pooch sleeps at night without any problems, but he also sleeps during the day. My pet can take several naps in one day and this is perfectly normal.

If you would like to learn more about our four-legged friends’ sleep, I refer you to my other post, which you can find here: Sleeping dog position.

Dogs like to get dirty

If you have a dog under your care, you surely know the subject very well from your experience. When I go out for a walk in the rain with my pooch, he jumps in every puddle I come across. I tried to prohibit it once, but today I know that this is the nature of my dog and there is nothing I can do about it.

On such rainy and muddy days, I expect my pooch to have a bath when I come home from a walk. Dogs like to get dirty very much, it is a way of fun for them. Even though I know that this is probably not very well perceived by many dog handlers, I encourage you to let your doggie out sometimes.

I guarantee you that the joy in his eyes once he spends some time in such a way. Simply prepare a bath for him when he returns. If you don’t know to efficiently arrange that, I am referring you to my other article devoted to fully dog bathing. You can find it here: Your Dog’s First Bath.

Do you know all your dog’s habits?

Some dogs’ habits are repeatable, no matter what breed they are. Dogs have many common features that we can observe in them in everyday life.
