You will find essential information to help you determine what suits your dog’s character and lifestyle better. If you decide that a collar is the best option for your dog, I will tell you how to choose the right size for your four-legged friend.
Is a collar a good choice for your dog?
I think there are as many supporters as possible of dog collars and harnesses among dog owners. However, if you do not know what to choose, then in many cases, the collar will be the better choice. Why? Because they do not recommend putting harnesses on puppies or quadrupeds, just learning to walk on a leash.
Therefore, a collar will be better if your dog belongs to one of the above groups. You can read more about this in my other post, where I explain what is better for a puppy, a harness, or a dog collar. You will find it here: collar or harness for a puppy?
Some dogs don’t like wearing harnesses. It is not worth forcing the dog to like this activity in such a situation. Choosing a collar will then be a much better solution. Putting it on in the highly fussy dogs will be the best solution.
What size should a dog collar be?
Moving on to the merits of our topic, I want to tell you what you should pay attention to when choosing the size of a collar for your dog. Unfortunately, an often-repeated mistake is buying a universal collar. You know that your dog is still a puppy and will undoubtedly grow, so you immediately buy a much larger collar with the thought that, initially, you will fasten it to the tightest eyelet.
That is a big mistake. You’re probably wondering why, so I will give you an answer. This solution will allow your four-legged friend to wear such a collar during walks. Nevertheless, it will be highly uncomfortable for him.
Collars designed for larger dogs tend to be heavier than those designed for small pets. The weight of such a collar can cause discomfort when walking your dog.
Moreover, such a collar is usually wider, so it will not fit the neck of a smaller dog. It may cause chafing when worn.
Your dog’s collar must match your four-legged friend’s current body structure. Remember that your pet will wear it several times a day. Therefore, even a small mismatch with such frequent and intensive use can cause many unpleasant situations.
How to choose a collar size?
Measure the dog’s neck
The basis from which we should start choosing a collar for a dog is to measure the circumference of his neck. That is undeniably a fundamental and crucial issue. How is it best to do this? I recommend you use a tape measure. It will be the most convenient and least invasive solution. It is soft and will not damage the dog’s delicate neck.
Where is the best place to measure your four-legged friend’s neck? Right at the nape. Usually, this is where the dog’s neck is the widest. Therefore, considering this circumference, you can be sure that the collar bought for this size will fit your dog.
Why should you measure your dog’s neck circumference and not buy collars thinking that your dog is a typical M or L? Choosing a size based on centimetres is much more accurate. Different brands have different sizes. Therefore, if your dog wears a given length from one manufacturer, you can’t be sure that the other will be the same.
Manufacturers of good-quality accessories for dogs always provide, in addition to the size of the product, information on what width of the dog’s neck will be the best option. Thanks to this, you can make sure that the size you choose will be suitable for your four-legged friend.
How tight should a dog collar fit?
You already know how to measure your dog’s neck in the best way to choose the suitable collar for him. But what next? You probably guessed that the collar for your dog should be slightly larger than the width of his neck.
Otherwise, wearing it would be very uncomfortable for the dog. Too tight a collar could cause your four-legged friend to have breathing problems. Even a gentle pull on the leash will cause him significant discomfort.
That is especially dangerous when your dog is just learning to walk correctly on a leash. Then he will often pull you along during walks. Therefore, if the collar is too tight, it will cause the constant dog discomfort.
Therefore, the dog collar should have a few centimetres of slack. So avoid situations when the dog collar fits perfectly around the neck of your four-legged friend. Although it may look better visually, it guarantees that it can be uncomfortable in everyday use.
Which dog collar to choose
When choosing a collar for a dog, I focus primarily on its quality and the quality of the materials used. I don’t want abrasions on my dog’s neck due to artificial materials. My number one is the MONACO dog collar from Bowl&Bone Republic.
It is made of suitable quality materials with the utmost care and looks lovely and stylish around my dog’s neck.
