Playing with a dog
How often do you play with your four-legged friend? I try to do this every day. Unfortunately, not all dog handlers know the importance of playing with a dog.
Play is an integral part of your pet’s life. You can probably hear that older dogs don’t need to play anymore. Nothing could be more wrong. For senior dogs, having fun in life is as essential as it is for puppies. It’s just that older dogs need to play in a slightly different way.
For your doggie, play is more than a way to spend his free time. I want to tell you about why having fun in your doggie’s life plays such an important and meaningful role for him. Maybe you have an idea why this is so. I was hoping you could write me your answer in the comments section at the end of the article.
How often do you play with your dog?
However, before I explain to you why having fun in your four-legged friend’s life is so important, I would like you to entirely honestly answer the question of how often you play with your dog. Unfortunately, he often observes such a regularity that the older a pet is, the less often his keepers spend time playing with him.
We spend the most time playing with the puppy, which is perfectly normal. At this stage of his life, the doggie primarily focuses on playing. Lying down and relaxing on the couch, young dogs like it, but it can get boring after a few moments.
The more a dog grows up, the more his interest in other forms of spending time than just playing begins to grow. That does not mean that he ceases to interest him at all. A different kind of play for an adult or older dog will be the most satisfying.
If you have no idea how to play with your doggy, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Other dog owners, including me, will happily tell you what activities have worked for their dogs.
I play with my dog every day. Of course, we spend more time having fun and sometimes less. However, I try to spend some time with my pet daily. I know it is also essential for him, and he is looking forward to this moment.
Why does a dog need play
There are several reasons why having fun in your dog’s life is so important. I hope that even if you see why how true the statement is, the arguments I have presented will persuade you to do so.
Time spent with the caregiver
Play is one of the dogs’ favourite ways to spend time with their beloved guardian. It is crucial for your four-legged friend that you have time during the day only for yourself. That has a significant impact on your bond.
In this situation, play in your dog’s eyes acts as a building block that strengthens your relationship. Yes, the dog enjoys the fun, but it has a double meaning. The doggie feels important and loved because you devote your time to him.
Playing gives your dog a sense of security and the awareness that he is someone special to you. Dogs like to spend time with their handler in various ways, from walking and relax on the couch. However, playing together with your pet is of utmost importance.
A way to stop boredom
For any of us, boredom lasting more than a moment is not pleasant. We are looking for a way to do something that will fully involve us. Your dog doesn’t have many options to spend his free time, and it’s you. Its capabilities are severely limited. Playing right next to sleep is one of the most common ways dogs kill boredom.
A bored dog is an unhappy dog. The fact that he has a toy at his disposal does not mean that it has to be interesting enough for him to be more interested than boredom at a particular moment. Dog toys can get boring with your four-legged friend. That is why it is worth changing them from time to time.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to keep buying him new ones. The mind of a doggie is very similar to ours in this regard. If we forget something that makes us happy, then when we remember it, our interest is much greater than if we had constant access to it. That’s why I try to rotate my dog’s toys so that he constantly experiences the feeling of novelty and freshness.
Developing your dog’s skills
We perfectly know that learning through play is very effective and fun at the same time. That also applies to your little dog. Space can also be one of the types of training for new skills. For this purpose, it is worth using all toys that develop the dog’s intellect and manual skills.
One such game may be searching for flavours hidden on the olfactory mat. Thanks to this, the dog can use his perfect sense of smell while playing. If you are worried about the best flavours to choose for such fun so that they have excellent composition, I recommend you make them yourself. Check out my DIY dog treats recipe. I highly recommend it to you.
Forging a bond with another dog
Friendship is a constant and inseparable part of your dog’s life. Even if you think your presence and commitment are all your dog needs, it guarantees you are wrong. The relationship between two dogs is entirely different from your bond with your dog. If you would like to learn a bit more about dog friendship, I refer you to the article you can find here: dog friendship – how dogs establish relationships.
Playing together is a constant element of a dog’s friendship. That is how the dogs spend the most time together. So, playing allows you to tighten the bond between your pet and his doggy friend.
What games are best for two dogs? All kinds of stretching and wrestling. My dog loves playing with his friend Frania using a thick rope bullet from Bowl & Bone Republic. Dogs wrestle and chase the toy.
