When do dogs shed fur the most?

a dog with his guardian in the city walk

Do you know at what times you can expect the most increased hair loss in your four-legged friend throughout the year? Dogs shed more heavily during transitional periods to prepare for the change of season.

Every dog guardian is undoubtedly familiar with the problem of their pet losing hair. At certain times of the year, dogs’ shedding is more intensified and noticeable.

What you will learn from this article:

  • Every dog sheds fur
  • In winter, your dog will prepare his body to protect himself from the cold
  • In the spring, dogs lose their fur because they are preparing for the arrival of high temperatures

Dogs shed their fur

An inseparable element of caring for my four-legged friend is cleaning his hair scattered all over the house. I have approached it as a permanent element in my life over the years. I got used to the fact that having a dog involves constant cleaning of the floor, furniture or clothes, and it doesn’t bother me as much as it did at the beginning.

However, your dog will not permanently shed his fur with the same intensity. There are times of the year when dogs shed the most, but also times when shedding hair is the least annoying. As a dog sitter, can you identify when these two stages in your pet’s life occur?

Of course, it also happens that a dog sheds a lot of hair, even if the season does not indicate it. That may be due to the poor health of the dog. In such situations, it will be necessary to consult a specialist.

Do all dogs shed their fur?

If you have a dog with hair, you must get used to regular shedding being a permanent element of his life. So does always a dog equal daily vacuuming? Not necessarily.

Dogs that have bristles instead of fur do not struggle with this problem. So, if you care about it, consider a dog breed such as Maltese or Yorkie.

However, does having bristles instead of fur solve all problems? Unfortunately not. Yes, dog hair falls out rather sporadically. Nevertheless, it must be trimmed regularly.

Therefore, having a dog with bristles in your care, you must prepare for regular visits to the dog groomer. If you want to learn more about who a groomer is, I refer you to my other entry, which is entirely devoted to this topic. You will find it HERE.

So, if you have a dog under your care, you will not always struggle with losing hair. However, in this case, grooming and regularly trimming your pet’s hair will be your job.

When do dogs shed the most fur?

Shedding your four-legged friend’s hair is a sure thing and cannot be avoided. Taking care of a dog, you must be ready for it. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t help your dog’s shedding time not be easier.

Seasonal shedding

Dogs shed their fur with a decidedly increased intensity with the change of seasons, or more precisely, the transition from one to another. That is the most typical process. However, interestingly, the shedding of hair by a dog at a particular time of the year is caused by specific factors. The reason for this phenomenon is different in summer and in winter. It is worth remembering this when preparing for this moment of the year.

The dog loses his fur in the spring

You can observe increased hair loss during spring with a four-legged friend under your care. That is one of the two times of the year when dogs shed the most fur. I see this on my dog every year.

Why do dogs shed their fur in the spring? For a straightforward and apparent reason. They are preparing their outer coat for the arrival of summer. What makes them need it? In winter, our dogs’ fur is thicker to protect the dog’s body to a greater or lesser extent from wind and low temperatures.

With the advent of spring and later summer, too thick hair could make the dog feel uncomfortable because it would simply be too hot. I don’t think it’s a pleasant feeling for anyone.

For this reason, when the warmer months arrive, you must be prepared that your four-legged friend will begin to shed more hair. His body works instinctively and conditions for the more generous time of the year. Therefore, if you notice that he begins to moult much more intensively with the advent of spring, this is an ordinary course, and you do not have to be afraid of it.

It is good to be aware of this because it makes it easier to control your dog’s hair shedding around the house.

The dog loses its fur in the winter

Another moment of the year when you can observe increased hair loss in your four-legged friend is the autumn and winter periods when the temperature outside the window begins to drop significantly. Why is this happening? Because your dog’s body instinctively senses that it will need extra protection from the cold.

The dog loses his existing hair, and a new, much thicker one grows, isolating the dog’s body from the wind and low temperatures.

Of course, this is not enough for many dogs to keep their dog warm during walks. In such situations, putting on your pet’s clothes for joint outings is necessary. If you would like to learn more about the temperature from which a dog should wear clothes during walks, I refer you to my other post, which you can find HERE.

The dog is losing fur due to illness

The disease can also cause excessive hair loss in a dog. One symptom may be excessive moulting in the case of deficiencies in the dog’s body. Therefore, if we are not currently in the period of increased hair shedding by dogs, and yet you have noticed that your pooch sheds very intensively, something may be wrong.

Increased hair loss in a dog can be caused by both severe diseases and those more mild ones. Therefore, unfortunately, when observing such a situation with a dog, you should be very careful.

If you have no suspicion of your dog’s ailment, do not hesitate to consult a veterinarian. Detection of the disease at its early stage allows for a rapid reaction, thus increasing the chances of full recovery of the dog.

The dog sheds fur due to vitamin deficiencies

Another reason for dog hair shedding may be vitamin deficiencies in its body. Diet is the foundation of a dog’s health. If he lacks essential vitamins, it will directly affect the proper functioning of the dog’s body. One of the symptoms of a lack of vitamins in your pet’s diet may be increased hair loss.

Dog shedding hair

Having a quadruped under your care, you must know that you’ll find his hair on the floor or carpet to a greater or lesser extent. It is an integral part of dog care.
