What does a dog mean to you? For me, it is more than just a pet. I can honestly say that my dog is one of my family members. His well-being and happiness are crucial to me. That’s why I want to show my love to him.
Dog friendship has made my life fuller. Taking care of a dog was one of my best decisions. I am sure that as a dog lover, you feel the same way. In this post, I want to show you how to show your dog tenderness.
We often forget that dogs perceive emotions differently than we do. So, knowing how to show love to a dog will be helpful for every dog owner. There are many things your dog perceives differently than you do. Therefore, it is good to know how your behaviour in his eyes is perceived negatively and positively.
Ways to show your dog love
Why showing affection to your dog in a way that your intuition tells you is not effective? Because for our dogs, different behaviours and gestures mean love and affection than it is for humans.
I have collected a few, in my opinion, the most important ways to show love to your dog. I hope that you will introduce one of them to your life with a pet by your side.
Dog greeting
I’m sure your dog reacts like mine when I come home. It doesn’t matter if I’ve been gone for five minutes or a whole day. Every time my pet greets me with the same enthusiasm and joy in his eyes.
I find this desirable trait in dogs and worth emulating. Therefore, one way to show my dog love is to return his happy greeting.
I always try to spend a few moments stroking and cuddling when I come home. I want my pet to feel that he is important to me and know that I like to return to him.
Fun with the dog
I know that you know how important it is for your pet to spend time together having fun. That is one of the best ways to show your dog love.
Seeing the joy in my pet’s eyes while playing, I know that he fully understands his importance to me. That’s why I try to spend as much time with him as actively as possible.

In addition, when preparing dog treats, I can be sure I choose high-quality ingredients. That is important because many store-bought flavours may not have nutritional compositions. Considering how often dogs get treats, e.g. during training for new skills, their quality should not raise any objections.

Stroking the dog
For humans, one way to show love to each other is by hugging. In the case of dogs, we can also show affection through touch. Dogs love to be stroked. For them, that’s the way you may show your love.
It is worth noting, however, that at the same time, stroking the dog can also be perceived negatively by him. When does this happen? When you pet a dog, you just met. For such a quadruped, the touch of a person he does not know and does not trust yet can be unpleasant.
I believe this is a crucial topic and, unfortunately, very often underestimated.
Joint walks
One of my dog’s favourite activities during the day is going for walks. That is the moment when the whole world is wide open to him. He can discover new scents, sniff, and track which he likes the most.
I can see that he enjoys walking the well-known trails and discovering new places. At the same time, I know that he feels good and safe with me.
Depending on the season, our walks look a bit different. In spring and summer, our outings become a walk in the park and a lot of time outside.
In winter, however, the walks are a bit shorter, but I try to make them intense because I know my dog needs them. We do not give up on cold days from having fun together outside. It does not last as long as in the summer, but I think it is essential that the dog can run outside a bit.
Frequent joint walks are probably one of my favourite ways to show my pet that he is important to me. That is the moment during the day when we can spend time with each other.
Conversation
I’m sure you talk to your dog a lot – admit it. I do it pretty much all the time. However, were you aware that it has a very positive effect on your relationship with your pet?
Dogs understand a lot, often a lot more than we think. Dogs can recognize up to 200 different words. That is an imposing number. What’s more, dogs are also great at reading the emotions of their interlocutor.
Therefore, talking to your pet is much more important to him than you might think. Your dog knows that he is the recipient of your words. It is important to him, and he feels appreciated and essential.
What’s more, talking to my dog is very important. I treat him as my friend. I tell him about my troubles and dilemmas, as well as about good and happy moments.
Talking to my pet gives me comfort in difficult times. Although I know he won’t tell me how I should act in a given situation, I feel better knowing that he is right next to me, and I can tell him everything at any time.
Why you need to know how to show your dog love
Why is it so crucial for you to show love to your dog? Because dogs are different from us and do not always perceive our behaviour correctly to our intentions.
For me, showing love to my dog is buying him toys. However, new things don’t mean that much to him. Yes, he is happy with the new cuddly toy, but it is not particularly valuable in his eyes. Much more critical to my dog is the time we spend together playing with this toy.
That’s why I think it’s good to know how your dog perceives the surrounding reality because he does it slightly differently than we do.
Show your dog that he is important to you
Show your love to your pet every day in at least choose one of the ways I mentioned. I am sure that you will immediately notice the great joy in your dog’s eyes. It also strengthens the relationship between you.
