Are you wondering if dog training is a type of activity that will work for your pet? I think you may not realize how many advantages dog training brings. Therefore, I will tell you about them and answer whether it is worth training a dog.

Dog training is not just about learning new commands. Your dog’s intelligence develops during training. The bonds between the dog and his owner become stronger. Spending time together on training is a form of entertainment for the pet. Training is a great way to spend time actively with your four-legged friend.

What you will learn from this article:

• During training, your dog learns to follow new commands

• Training has a positive effect on the dog’s intelligence

• Learning new skills is a great way to spend time with your dog

Dog training

Speaking with other dog owners, we sometimes ask one question: is dog training necessary? As it turns out, dog training is often perceived as reserved for dogs participating in competitions or actively spending their time. That is a big mistake because I believe that it is worth training every dog.

Dog training is not just about learning tricks or complex commands. Training your puppy positively affects your daily life with your pet. It helps the dog find himself in unforeseen situations without panic and confusion.

What’s more, the training process itself is an incredible moment for the dog and his guardian. You can spend active time together, which has a very positive effect on your relationships. That is why I believe training a dog has only advantages and is not worth giving up on.

What you need to know about dog training

First, before you start training your dog, consider whether the given command is feasible for him. Not always will the dog be able to cope with every command due to the structure of its body, physical fitness, and character.

So, start your dog training by evaluating your dog’s abilities. There is no point in tormenting him with ongoing training that may not lead to achieving the goal you set.

What should dog training look like?

Good training of your quadruped should bring results quickly and pleasantly for your dog. If it is too difficult for him, the dog will perceive the training process negatively and soon become discouraged.

I have collected some essential rules you must remember when training your dog. You can find my full post on this topic HERE. I hope this will help you better prepare for joint training with your dog.

Why you should train your dog

What are the benefits of dog training? I assure you there are many more than you think. Dog training is more than just acquiring new skills, which positively affects the dog.

Maintaining the bond with your dog

There is no denying that joint training with a dog allows you to get to know him better and understand his needs. As you learn new skills, you learn what your pet finds difficult and what comes quickly and effortlessly.

That is very helpful in everyday life with a four-legged friend. You know his strengths and weaknesses. What’s more, training together has a very positive effect on the care of your bonds. You can spend more time together in a playful way. We know that dogs love movement and joint action with their guardian.

I can see that since training new skills became my routine with my dog, our bonds have become much stronger. When you pass on some knowledge to your pet, you become an authority in his eyes. He has more respect for you and is willing to listen to your commands.

Dog intelligence development

When answering why it is worth training a dog, one cannot fail to mention how much it impacts his intelligence. Even if you teach your dog a simple command, you strengthen his concentration and determination.

Surely you have noticed that with each new command your dog learns, it becomes much easier for him to master the next skill. The ease of acquiring knowledge is then increasing.

A way to have fun

For my dog, our joint training is perceived as a kind of fun. I can see from him that he enjoys learning new skills. He knows it’s not fun, but it doesn’t change the fact that he likes to spend time this way. It is primarily influenced by the flavours always waiting for him in my MIDI pouch from Bowl&Bone Republic when he correctly executes the command.

For our dogs, any form of joint activity is something nice. What’s more, I happened to meet dogs for whom the normal state of play was too dull. Only during the training of new skills could they fully demonstrate and engage.

Consider how your dog approaches training. You may not have even noticed how much he enjoys training together.

Facilitating dog care

You teach your dog primarily those instructions that will make your life together easier, right? I also first decided to train my dog with commands, such as: come to me, leave or go.

If the dog can correctly perform these commands, it can be constructive in various unforeseen situations. When I am with my dog on a walk, and it becomes interested in the scattered garbage, thanks to the leave command, I can avoid a situation when the dog eats it.

The situation is similar when something potentially dangerous happens, such as a dog who wants to run across a busy street or jump into the nearby water in pursuit of a squirrel. The command to me allows me to control the dog’s behaviour and avoid danger.

Dogs, in many cases, cannot judge whether their behaviour is safe. Their instinct is the main factor, which can be difficult to fight without prior training in each behaviour model.

Therefore, I would answer “yes” to whether a dog needs training.

Strengthening the condition of the dog

Many of the commands you teach your dog engage not only his mind but also his body. Training your pet is a great way to improve their physical condition.

That is especially useful when your dog is not very keen on spending time actively, and you know a bit of sport would benefit him. You can then choose commands that you know require more effort from him.

Sport through play or training will work well for lazy dogs. If you want to know more ways to stimulate your dog to active action, I refer you to the entry that you will find HERE.

Developing mutual understanding

Your pet learns through training what you expect from him in a particular situation. Sometimes we try to convince the dog to behave a certain way, but he does not understand what we mean. That is normal because if you haven’t practised a command with your dog, you can’t expect it to know right away.

Dog training makes it easier to understand each other. Your dog, learning certain behaviours, can use them to communicate with you. For example, when something surprises him and he doesn’t quite know how to behave, my dog sits down and looks at me. He does this as a result of mastering the stay command, which I often use when something unexpected happens, and he wants to avoid a violent dog relationship.

Learning new commands

At the very end, I would like to mention what is probably the essential purpose of training a dog. Namely, it is your dog learning new commands.

I think this is the primary goal of each of us when we undertake dog training. We want him to master such commands as stay, go, leave or in place. In my dog’s case, learning each subsequent command came easier and much faster than the previous one.

Dog training – is it worth it?

Training a dog is not just about teaching them new skills. It is also a great way to spend free time with your pet in an active way. Training also has a very positive effect on the development of the dog’s intelligence and his ability to read your commands.

I think it is essential to train a dog. Not only because he is learning new commands but also because of all the positive aspects of training I told you about.

Do you think dog training is necessary? I was hoping you could share your opinion with me in the comments.

If you have any questions or want me to discuss a topic in the next post, share it in the comments section.
