Why should a puppy wear a collar?

When completing a layette for a puppy, a fundamental issue is the choice of walking accessories. For very young dogs, I recommend choosing a dog collar. In the first months of a dog’s life, the collar has a much better effect on the body posture of a small dog.

Puppies should wear collars starting at the first stage of their life. The body posture of very young dogs is not fully standardized, and the collar does not disturb this process. The dog collar is easy to put on, which is essential for puppies that are just learning a lot of the basics of everyday life.

What will you learn from this article?

  • for a small puppy, a collar is a better choice than a harness
  • wearing a collar for a puppy has many health benefits
  • You should adjust the puppy’s collar to his size and weight

The puppy should wear a collar

Preparing a layette for a puppy is a real challenge. I remember well when I completed the accessories before my dog came to the house. I wanted to give him the best. The choice of products available on the market is enormous, so I know it is easy to get confused.

An essential element in preparing a layette for your puppy is the selection of walking accessories. Going out together will be a regular part of your everyday life, especially when it comes to a small dog who is just learning to clean, so the number of walks during the day will be significant.

For your puppy, a collar is the best option to start. The dog harness is fine, but only at a slightly later stage of its development.

Why a puppy should wear collars

A collar is a preferred choice for puppies as it is the best option for a puppy’s fragile body. Young dogs do not yet have a fully developed and normalized body posture. Choosing a collar does not negatively affect this process.

It is impossible not to notice that puppies have a big problem with walking with their feet during walks. They have vast energy, and absolutely everything around them is fascinating. They want to reach every nook and cranny of the park at all costs and get to know every smell.

The collar makes it easier to control an unruly toddler. Moreover, the puppy feels resistance to pulling on the leash earlier than it does with a harness. This solution makes it easier for you to teach your little pet to walk on foot.

Advantages of a puppy wearing a collar

Comfortable accessories are the basis of a victorious walk. It will be very reluctant if your puppy is uncomfortable going out together. In extreme cases, he will try hard to free himself from awkward accessories. Therefore, when choosing a layette for your little dog, ensure that you adjust everything to his weight, height and individual needs.

The dog’s collar is comfortable to put on

You cannot deny that the difficulty in putting on the dog’s collar is very low, even if you do not have any previous experience in this field. The most important thing is to choose the right size and adjust it well. Once you do it, it will be easy to put it on, even for a naughty puppy.

I remember that day when my first walk with my dog was waiting for me. I feared I would have trouble getting him ready to go out together. However, it soon turned out to be easier than I initially thought.

The collar I chose for my puppy was a chocolate MONACO from Bowl & Bone Republic. This colour goes well with the colour of his coat. If you want to know more about the essence of the colours of dog accessories, I refer you to my post, which you can find HERE.

The collar makes it easier for your dog to learn to walk on a leash

As I mentioned, teaching your puppy to walk on a leash when wearing a collar is much easier. The dog harness distributes the pressure, which makes the dog feel less when he starts to pull us on the leash. In the case of a collar, a puppy can sense our resistance much faster.

Therefore, wearing a collar with puppies will significantly facilitate the beginning of your adventure with your little dog. Walks will be a permanent part of your everyday life with your dog. For this reason, it is worth making sure that it is a pleasant time from the beginning, both for you and your four-legged friend.

The dog collar is easy to clean

When my dog was a little puppy, one of his favourite games was splashing around in puddles. Initially, I tried to fight it. However, I quickly realized that it didn’t make sense, and I had to get used to cleaning it every time we returned from a walk on a rainy day.

The dog most liked to lie on his back during this joyful play. If he was wearing a harness and not a collar, I’m sure I would have to wash it every time I got home.

Cleaning the collar takes less time. That is important in the case of a puppy for which the command leave or leg is something completely unknown. My dog used to go everywhere when he was little. All my attempts to distract him from this intention were unsuccessful.

I believe that the hygiene of dog accessories is a significant issue. That is especially true for puppies. Their immune system develops slowly. Therefore, in their case, you should take special care.

The collar does not burden the puppy’s body posture

Before your puppy’s body posture is fully normalized, this process will take about a few months after his puppy is born. Your puppy should wear a collar during walks during this time. In the case of a harness, they can negatively affect the posture of a young puppy’s spine.

It is worth mentioning, however, that this is a fundamental issue in the first months of a dog’s life. That does not mean that a dog harness is a bad choice. Nothing could be more wrong. Currently, my dog feels much better-wearing braces for walks. A lot depends on the personal preferences of the dog.

What collar to choose for a puppy

When choosing a collar for your puppy, ensure it is not too heavy for him. The too-bulky collar may overload him while moving, which will be a very uncomfortable feeling for him during walks. Puppies have much less strength than adult puppies; you should keep this in mind when choosing a collar for your dog.

Your puppy’s collar should have a soft finish on the inside. Why? Because the skin of young dogs can be very delicate. It can be very prone to chafing, mainly because the dog can pull intensely during his first walks.

Another significant feature of a puppy collar should be its durability. Young dogs are curious about the world; they want to go everywhere during their walks. As a result, they pull a lot and try to break free from the leash. The poor quality collar can cause it to break.

As a result, a puppy that cannot yet respond correctly to your commands may rush into the pursuit of the chosen target. This situation can be hazardous. The doggy can fall into the nearby water or run into the street.

Therefore, for your puppy’s safety, ensure their collar is solid enough not to break off their neck on the first hard pull.

Should the puppy wear a collar?

For a small puppy, a collar will be the best choice for walks. Therefore, if you are wondering what to buy for your pet, I hope I managed to dispel your doubts at least a little.

What did you choose for your pet when he was a little puppy? It was a dog harness or a collar.
